2027 planning: 2027 tournament dates and the early-bird Ground Pass offer are published. Transport benefits and visitor rules retain their edition labels.
The tournament in brief
The Australian Open brings summer Grand Slam tennis to Melbourne Park beside the city centre. Tennis Australia has confirmed Opening Week for 11–16 January 2027 and the singles main draw for 17–31 January. Choose your date and ticket before the rest of the trip: a Melbourne holiday with one tennis day needs a different plan from a week built around the tournament.
Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena are the principal covered show courts. Outside courts reward visitors who enjoy finding a close match and staying for an unexpected favourite. Look up the Order of Play the evening before you attend, then choose a first court and a backup. The programme determines who plays where; no ticket guarantees your favourite player. Leave room between matches for water, shade and a proper break.

Opening Week and qualifying
Opening Week is a separate opportunity to see qualifying and preparation before the main draw. The confirmed 2027 range is 11–16 January; use the official programme for each day’s competitions, practice and special events. An Opening Week purchase is not a main-draw Ground Pass. Compare the stated admission and court inclusions before buying, particularly if a stadium exhibition is your reason for going.
For a first visit on a smaller budget, qualifying can offer a satisfying day of competitive tennis without making a main-arena seat the centre of the purchase. Plan to spend time at several courts and follow the match scores when choosing your next stop. Check the official 2027 product for the price, availability and Opening Week inclusions. Keep the distinction between a tennis ticket and an entertainment add-on clear.
The organiser’s 8 October announcement sets 2027 Opening Week entry at A$10 for adults and A$5 for children, with children free on Monday 11 January. Charity matches have separate tickets. Choose the product for your own day and check its inclusions before paying.

How to get tickets
Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster Australia via ausopen.com. The organiser announced earlier ticket sales for 2027, with general sales opening on 13 August 2026. Create the Ticketmaster account you will use for entry and read the delivery instructions before travelling. Use the AO-linked official resale route when offered, and check whether a listing is resale and what transfer restrictions apply.
The published early-bird Ground Pass starting price is A$49 (about £26), with the offer running until 12:59pm AEDT on 30 November 2026. It is a starting price for the advertised product, not a guarantee for every date, age category or ticket still available. First-week Ground Pass quantities are capped for 2027. If your day is fixed, do not assume there will be unlimited gate availability.
| Route | When | What you get | Rough price / year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening Week | 11–16 January 2027 | Advertised qualifying, practice and events | 2027 adult A$10; child A$5; children free 11 January; charity matches separate |
| Ground Pass | Chosen main-draw day | Outside courts and listed unreserved JCA access | 2027 early-bird from A$49; offer ends 30 November 2026 |
| Rod Laver Arena day | Named day session | Reserved seat in main arena; listed precinct access | 2027 A$ total varies by session/category |
| Rod Laver Arena night | Separate evening session | Reserved seat; stated evening entry | 2027 A$ total: live official booking summary |
| Margaret Court Arena | Named day/night product | Reserved seat and specified extras | 2027 A$ total: live official booking summary |
| John Cain Arena | Named reserved-seat product | Reserved seat; distinguish unreserved Ground Pass access | 2027 A$ total: live official booking summary |
Arena prices vary by session and seating category. Use the live official booking summary to compare the total for the same date and party. Include any advertised charges before deciding that an arena upgrade fits your budget. A resale seat may cost a different amount from the original public offer. Keep flight and accommodation cancellation terms in view while committing to the tennis.

Which ticket and which day
A Ground Pass gives outside-court and precinct access, with unreserved John Cain Arena seating as listed in the current ticket information. It does not supply a reserved seat in Rod Laver or Margaret Court Arena. Unreserved admission depends on space; choose another court when the queue would consume the match time you hoped to enjoy. A reserved arena purchase secures the named session and seat, with its stated grounds access.
Opening main-draw days offer the broadest singles choice. In the second week there are fewer singles matches, but headline rounds and other competitions can make a focused arena visit worthwhile. Check doubles, juniors and wheelchair schedules as they are published. Day and night products are separate: the official 2027 Ticketmaster help describes night arena entry from 5pm. Read your ticket’s time and do not assume it admits you all morning.
If you only have one day: choose an early main-draw date and a reserved arena seat if you want a dependable viewing base. Add outside courts between matches. A Ground Pass is the flexible alternative if you are happy to adapt to queues and heat; Opening Week suits visitors who prioritise qualifying and practice over a particular star.

Getting there from the UK
Allow a full long-haul journey from London. Emirates currently advertises a Heathrow–Melbourne itinerary via Dubai of about 22 hours 40 minutes; a practical planning allowance is roughly 22–26 hours for a suitable one-stop routing, with longer connections taking more. Check the arrival date carefully because the time difference and overnight flying can move it into the next day or beyond. Give yourself a recovery day before the first important match.
Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine, code MEL, is the main international arrival airport. SkyBus connects it with Southern Cross in the CBD. Checked in October 2026, the adult Melbourne City Express fare is A$25.90 one way (about £14) or A$43.40 return. SkyBus describes an average journey of about 30 minutes; allow longer with traffic and terminal walking. Its timetable currently runs from early morning into the night, not a guaranteed all-night departure whenever your plane lands.
A taxi or prebooked transfer is useful for a direct hotel journey, especially with substantial luggage or access needs. Compare the quoted fare and any airport or booking charges before accepting. SkyBus arrival at Southern Cross still leaves the hotel leg: walk, use local transport or arrange a suitable taxi. Avoid confusing Tullamarine with Avalon, a separate airport with a different transfer.

Getting there on your tennis day
Melbourne Park is close enough to the CBD for walking to be a serious option. The transport operator’s 2026 event information estimated around ten minutes from Flinders Street or Richmond stations and eleven from Jolimont to the event approach. These are station-to-precinct estimates, not hotel-to-seat times. Add crowd queues, security and the walk to your own court; a central room can make that final part easier to plan.
For the 2026 Australian Open, valid ticket holders had free event-day travel on tram routes 70 and 70a between Docklands and the John Cain Arena stop. The transport operator’s 2027 offer has not been announced yet. Recheck its event page and AO arrival advice before relying on a free ride, and read the permitted route, segment and ticket-day rules when announced.
Save the return route before entering. A long night match can finish after your planned connection, and an ordinary tram timetable may differ from an event service. Keep a charged phone and an alternative way to reach your hotel. If staying in St Kilda or another outer base, count the whole journey with changes and waiting, not simply the final tram ride beside Melbourne Park.

Accessibility
Use the AO accessibility page and Ticketmaster’s accessible-ticket option to arrange suitable seats and accompanying places. Wheelchair spaces and companion arrangements need the correct product; an ordinary arena seat can involve steps. Confirm any Companion Card eligibility with the organiser, especially if you hold a UK-issued disability document. Do not assume an overseas card provides the same entitlement.
Plan the gate route as well as the seat. Ask about the accessible entrance, toilets and any assistance you need between courts. The 2026 transport plan identified accessible shuttle trams, but the 2027 route and service details need confirmation. Check the chosen station, platform and tram stop with the operator. A hotel near the precinct can reduce transfers, provided the room and street route meet your needs.
For unreserved outside-court viewing, ask event staff about suitable positions when you arrive. Set a manageable plan with rest breaks and another court choice if the first viewing area is full. Tell accommodation staff about access requirements before booking, including lift size, bathroom layout and any equipment you will bring.

Entry requirements for UK visitors
GOV.UK says British visitors need a visa to enter Australia and a passport valid for the proposed stay. Depending on eligibility, a tourist can apply for an eVisitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). An ETA is applied for through the official Australian ETA app; it is not the only possible route for a British passport holder. Follow the Home Affairs links provided by GOV.UK and check approval before departure.
The eVisitor application is free; an ETA may involve a service fee. Check the official application route for current charges and requirements. A stopover can introduce the transit country’s own entry rules, especially if you leave the airport. Read GOV.UK Australia entry requirements for your circumstances. This information was checked on 8 October 2026; use the current official advice before your trip.

Money and time
Use Australian dollars, written A$. Sterling examples here use the ECB reference rates dated 8 October 2026, equivalent to A$1 ≈ £0.526; examples are rounded to whole pounds. A$49 is about £26 at that rate. Your payment provider’s rate and foreign-transaction charges can differ, so compare the local-currency total and keep a separate budget for meals and transport.
Melbourne is eleven hours ahead of the UK during the January tournament. A 7pm local session starts at 8am UK time, which is worth remembering when arranging a call home. Tourism Australia says tipping is not generally expected, although an optional tip for good service in an upmarket restaurant is welcome. Check whether a bill already contains a charge.
AO’s published 2026 arrival information says the event was cashless. Carry a physical card or digital wallet, plus a backup payment method. Recheck the 2027 visitor instructions before departure for the current payment policy and accepted methods; the 2026 label is intentional. Check your bank’s overseas-use settings before an arena queue becomes the place you discover a payment problem.

Weather, heat and roofs
January is summer in Melbourne. A hot afternoon can be intense on an exposed court, while a change in weather can leave the evening noticeably cooler. Pack a hat, high-protection sunscreen, a light layer and a permitted refillable bottle. Locate water points on the event map and refill during natural breaks. Choose shade when taking a rest and avoid turning a Ground Pass into an endurance test.
The AO Extreme Heat Policy assesses several conditions through a heat-stress scale, including temperature, humidity, radiation and wind. The published AO26 protocol allows play to be suspended on exposed courts at the highest level and roofs to be closed under the applicable procedure. For 2027 follow the referee’s announcements and the current policy; do not treat a particular forecast temperature as a promise that play will stop.
Rod Laver, Margaret Court and John Cain arenas have retractable roofs. That offers more protection than an outside-court itinerary, but a Ground Pass does not guarantee an available roofed seat. Rain and heat can change the running order. Read the ticket’s weather terms and keep flexible plans after the session so you can enjoy a delayed match without losing a prepaid evening booking.

What to bring and entry rules
Use the current conditions of entry before packing. The 2026 conditions required personal bags to fit beneath a seat; that is a dated rule, not a new numerical 2027 allowance. Leave suitcases and bulky equipment at the hotel. Check prohibited items, bottle materials and any limits on food or alcohol in the new edition’s rules instead of assuming an airline-compliant bag is stadium-compliant.
Keep the digital ticket, identification where required and a charged phone accessible at security. A compact power bank, sunscreen and a light weather layer make a more useful kit than a large bag of extras. Confirm the current water refill locations and permitted bottle before setting out. If visiting with children, check pram storage and the ticket requirements for the relevant ages; avoid inferring them from an adult price.
AO 2027 child tickets apply to ages three to eleven on the attendance date. Children aged two and under may enter free when they do not occupy a reserved seat. Buy an appropriate ticket if they need their own reserved seat. Compare child tickets and plan a family tennis day.

Food and drink at the venue
The precinct programme includes food, entertainment and spaces to pause between matches. Look at the 2027 map and listings for the outlets operating on your date. A restaurant reservation or entertainment purchase may be a separate product, so check whether it includes tennis admission. Start with the match schedule and fit lunch into a gap that works for your court choices.
For dietary needs, speak to the outlet about ingredients and preparation before ordering. Give yourself time for queues during the lunch peak, and avoid joining a popular stand just as your chosen match begins. Refilling water and taking a shaded break can matter more than squeezing in one extra court change. Plan an early meal before a night session if a late hotel return would leave few options.

Where to stay
We may earn a commission if you book through some links, at no extra cost to you.
A CBD or East Melbourne room can keep several tennis days straightforward. Southbank adds river-side evenings, Richmond suits a neighbourhood stay close to the east of the precinct, and Docklands can work with the right connection. St Kilda offers a different holiday setting but more travel. Check air conditioning, actual walking distance and cancellation terms for the January dates you want.
Journey times are door-to-gate estimates from a well-connected spot in each area. They include waiting and the final walk; your hotel address, transport disruption and event crowds can change them. Price levels are a rough guide: check live prices for your dates. Compare total room costs, breakfast, local taxes and cancellation deadlines for the same dates and occupants. For a night session, check the return journey as carefully as the morning route.

Make a weekend of it
A Yarra river walk and the CBD laneways are flexible additions that work well on a recovery afternoon or free morning. Keep ambitious sightseeing away from your tennis day, particularly after arriving from the UK. Make time for a relaxed meal and let the first local night be a chance to recover from the flight.
The MCG’s visitor attractions include the Australian Sports Museum and stadium tours. Use their official booking information for opening times and match-day restrictions. The current museum name is Australian Sports Museum; the older National Sports Museum name can lead to stale listings. Choose a separately timed visit when you have room for the walk and a proper look around.
The Great Ocean Road is a much larger outing. Tourism Australia describes a substantial coastal route with attractions spread along it. If you have only one free day, compare an organised day trip and its full return time; a longer stay can give the road more breathing room. Avoid booking a dawn departure immediately after a late tennis finish. Melbourne itself offers enough for a short Grand Slam break.

Planning timeline
In October 2026, compare currently available 2027 tickets, passport and visa arrangements, and flexible accommodation. If using the advertised Ground Pass early-bird offer, note its 30 November deadline and the stated time zone. In November–December, confirm flights, transit requirements and visa approval, then build in recovery time on arrival. Check that the ticket account works on the phone you will take.
In early January, revisit tram arrangements, the stadium map, packing rules and payment instructions for the new edition. Check your hotel’s cancellation deadline and the forecast. On the evening before the visit, read the Order of Play, choose a first court and decide how to return after a long session. On the day, allow time for entry and begin with water and shade locations.

More Grand Slam trips
Compare Wimbledon for a UK grass-court day, Roland-Garros for a Eurostar trip to Paris, and the US Open for New York. Melbourne offers a summer escape during the UK winter, but the long journey calls for a different trip length.
Choose the total holiday you can comfortably manage, then match the ticket to it. One good tennis day with time to explore can be more satisfying than several tightly scheduled sessions after a long flight. Compare the full cost in local currency and give the itinerary enough room for delays, heat and recovery.
