Compare the same kind of tennis day

For a UK visitor who can get to London and return home, Wimbledon is usually the strongest budget starting point. That is our trip-planning judgement: you can avoid an overseas journey and a hotel. If London means several hotel nights for you, compare Paris before deciding. Your starting town, party size and the tennis you want can change the result.

A free qualifying match and a reserved Grand Slam final are very different purchases. Begin with a simple brief: one day of competitive tennis, how many nights away, and whether you need a guaranteed seat in a named stadium. Then add travel, transfers, meals and accommodation. The table keeps the ticket’s year and session beside its price so an older example does not turn into a promise for the new edition.

Qualifying and Opening Week can include competitive tennis and practice. Check court access before buying any separately ticketed exhibition.

The lowest Wimbledon grounds rate comes late in the fortnight, when there are fewer outside-court matches. For an early-round visit, use the appropriate earlier-day rate. Melbourne’s Opening Week price is below its main-draw Ground Pass offer, but those products cover different programmes. New York’s free qualifying makes admission excellent value if you are already there; it does not make the journey from Britain free.

Count the journey and the nights

Use the real London-to-venue itinerary when comparing offers. A Paris train arrives in the city, but Gare du Nord is still a journey from Roland-Garros. A flight quotation needs its luggage allowance, airport transfer and return timing added. For Melbourne, look carefully at connecting flights and leave room to recover before the session you most want to enjoy. A rushed arrival can spoil the value of the ticket you saved on.

For London, Southfields and Wimbledon station give different ways to reach the grounds. Read the Wimbledon travel section and check the route that fits your own starting point. An easy return train can make a day trip attractive; a last service that leaves before a long match finishes makes that plan less comfortable.

Price the whole stay with the same room occupancy and cancellation terms. Include breakfast, taxes and venue travel. A cheap room can become costly if you rely on taxis. Save the quotation date so you can recognise a changed offer.

Choose a base that protects the saving

The Roland-Garros Where to stay section compares Boulogne-Billancourt with central sightseeing bases. Its price level is Budget to higher. Check the actual hotel address: a good last connection is worth more than a familiar district name. A nearby room can also make returning between tennis days easier.

For the Australian Open, weigh a central base against the cost of every additional night. For the US Open, compare a Queens base with the Manhattan neighbourhoods you want to explore. Treat sightseeing as part of the holiday budget, especially when a free tennis day leaves spare time to spend elsewhere.

Check entry paperwork before committing to non-refundable travel. Read GOV.UK for the passport you actually hold, including eligibility limits on visa-free or electronic-authorisation routes. France’s EES process may add border time. Entry permission, travel insurance and a ticket are separate parts of the plan; having one does not settle the others.

Our answer: start near home, then compare Paris

Choose Wimbledon first if a day return is practical and you are happy with the courts included in your ticket. It offers the clearest way to keep the journey and accommodation bill down for many UK visitors. You still need an authorised ticket route and a realistic plan for the Queue if that is how you intend to enter.

Compare Roland-Garros next for a short overseas break. Opening Week gives you a competitive-tennis option, and the rail route makes it straightforward to build a city trip around Paris. The conclusion is about the whole holiday; it is not a claim that one old ticket price beats every live offer.

Melbourne and New York make more financial sense as holidays you already want. Their inexpensive opening programmes can add memorable tennis. For the cheapest possible Grand Slam trip, compare actual nearby options first.

Questions before you book

Which Slam should I try first on a small UK budget?

Start with Wimbledon when you can travel home after play. Paris is the next short-trip comparison; use qualifying or Opening Week if seeing competitive tennis matters more than a final.

Are the ticket prices directly comparable?

No. Opening Week, late-fortnight grounds admission and a main-draw Ground Pass offer different tennis. Compare the same type of day before choosing.

Can New York qualifying be free?

Yes: US Open qualifying was free in 2026. Wait for the new Fan Week programme and check registration before making the journey.

Do these hotel levels guarantee a room price?

No. They are relative planning judgements, not sampled nightly tariffs. Search your exact dates and include transport, taxes and cancellation terms.

Should I book travel before my tennis ticket?

Secure the ticket first when a particular session matters. While dates or admission remain provisional, use refundable arrangements and review cancellation deadlines.
